I wrench on my car, I tweak things I like to have control, I have tools, this is a tool, I own it.
but if you never going to really use it. Give someone $20.00 the next time someone lets you borrow theirs or does these things for you.

If you work on your own car you will use it ...
The VAG software not only allows you to make some some adjustments and calibrations it is mainly used as a diagnostic tool to help you find problems. The car has a series of control modules that log problems in the form of diagnostic codes. The VAG tool can help you read the code and quite often the codes return a bit of text to clue you in on the source of the problem. This whole system ties in to the Repair manual that will allow you to interpret the codes and begin on a logic tree (step by step in the manual) to find the problem through a series of tests. Quite often the VAG is used to run tests and log values in the process. You can also do things like take it out for runs to log rpm/hp/torque etc. Tons of other stuff. If you have experience working on cars you will LOVE this program when coupled with the Bentley manual. Without these tools it is almost impossible to work on these cars. So, like I said IF you work on your car get it. If you don't there would be no point.

Get a VAG-com if any of these is true:
- You don't have a nearby friend from whom to borrow one
- You plan to do your own maintenance or troubleshooting when something goes wrong (a check engine light, rough engine, etc.)
- You have turbos and plan to chip the engine (so you can look for error codes and boost values)
- You have a Tip and want to recode it (so you can return it to stock for service visits)
- You want to make a hobby of modifying.
And, you need to have (access to) a laptop computer, or a desktop in your garage.
Otherwise, use this board to borrow one, set the mods you'd like, then forget it.
If you expect ever to use the VAG-com on a 2002 or later (even just to help friends), then get the Twin-com version ($20 more).

After warranty, it'll cost that much to have your check engine light
looked at by a dealer... Besides, by being a VAG tool owner, you get access to the Bentley A6 CD for $70 instead of $90 + ... then you can REALLY have fun with your VAG!
