You can get the...
NavPlus unit from avalonmotorsports.com which is the factory nav/TV/DVD unit from Europe which is OEM'ed for Audi's. The unit is 2500.00 and is actually really nice. Pretty sure that includes everything exept tv tuner. The people at avalon are a little nasty but they do have a good product so that really would probably be your best bet. It's factory and fits/looks exactly like your symphony radio but with the screen.

Pioneer Nav.
At first i was thinking about getting the Nav. Plus from avalonmotorsports, but at $2500 with CD based Nav is overpriced. I went with Pioneer DVD based nav. AVIC-9DVD with 6.5" removable screen. in my opinion its much better than the Nav. Plus simply because it covers US and Canada on 1 DVD instead of 13 CDs. i have the DVD unit mounted in my glove compartment and the screen is mounted right below the vents in the center console. And it also plays dvd movies.

Consider a handheld
The built-in GPS units are awfully expensive, and you're committed to using their equally overpriced proprietary software. From what I've read in previous posts, replacement CDs are so expensive they belong in safe deposit box. You can buy an excellent handheld for a fraction of the price and download software upgrades from the net. And unlike a built-in, it goes with you when you travel by air.
I use a Rand McNally GPS that clips onto my Palm; its got me unlost many times and cost me under $100, and it uses any of the NMEA standard GPS software for the Palm OS.

I use CoPilot with the laptop.
The pluses:
- laptop has superior processor, memory, screen in comparison with ANY dedicated GPS.
- CoPilot has voice output and voice recognition.
- cheap,
- you can use laptop for other stuff like VAG-COM, DVDs, MP3, etc
- easy to upgrade (I had CoPilot 2001 and copy of the CoPilot software for 2002).
The minus:
- you need laptop,
- takes time to startup the system (connect wire, boot system, login, open CoPilot).
