Default Need advice on springs for a 2002 4.2

Thus far this is what I have learned. The H&R springs are made for the lighter V6s, so when used on the 4.2, the front drops too much and there is insufficient ground clearance right in front of the front wheels. I haven't received favorable opinions about the quality of the Eibachs made in the U.S. The German made Eibachs have been recommended, however they don't seem to make a set for the 4.2. I would like to use H&Rs as I have them on my Mercedes and love them. I really want to resolve this quickly because the fender gap looks funny to me and I'm not so thrilled about the way the car seems to want to float a little when taking fast sweeping turns.

Default H&R Coilovers--I've had them on my 00 4.2 for well over a year and they work great.

Obviously--you can adjust it to where you want it, front and rear.

Thanks, I think that's the way I am going to go... $1800 including installation sound fair?

Please post a report about results if you do go H&R, particularly regarding the float issue. Tks

Default Definitely will...

even with the sport package, the A6 suspension is too soft IMO. Any sweeping turn past 90 mph coupled with a bump or slope causes a slight upward and outward drift that I am not comfortable with. I use H&R springs with Kleemann self-adjusting shocks for my Mercedes, which produces a rock solid, yet comfortable ride. I want a similar, but more luxury oriented ride for the A6.

Default Really my only sustainable beef with the 4.2 has been the wishy-washy suspension.

I totally agree - and thought that the sport package was going to be a lot different than it is. Great body-roll control, but positively Oldsmobile-like "floatyiness" in fast sweepers.

I'm leasing, and am looking forward to something better from Audi (S6, new A6?) when I trade it in, thus I haven't gone the alteration route. Too much money to give away later on.

Default That's what I'm going to do... what do you think is a fair price for it, installed?

Thanks a bunch.

I got a story to tell about my fiasco with a S500 w/ Erebuni spoiler.

Default Mine was very early 00, so no sport option. No float...

As I've posted before, I autocross and open track this thing (also leased Mista Gotts) and I wouldn't do that if it floated. Nice, controlled low and high speed cornering--works very well with SO3s, but I do recommend four corner weight balancing once you've driven them about a month (to settle down)--really showed a difference at Buttonwillow and Willow Springs. Still very comfortable--take trips with wife and two girls. It's really a no-brainer. Bought them for a shy less than $1200 and installed for $575, though I did have my dealer double-check what the privateer did afterwards--private guy disconnected the light leveling sensors. If I buy another non-RS6 A6, I will forego the sport, and swap these (or new ones) in just because of the adjustability.
