Default Side note: If you keep parking like this, you'll cause $2000 damage to front end in no time flat....

The underside of the bumper gets caught on curbs, or especially those wheel stops in most parking lots. Most notably when you pull straight over it, rather than at an angle as you have here.

Then, as you back up, the bottom edge of the bumper cover will get caught, bend downward (becoming even more firmly caught), and then bend inward the sides of the car's sheet metal, and rip the bumper cover off in nasty fashion.

If I find I've parked in this manner, I slip some large pieces of cardboard between the underside of the bumper/engine and the top of the curb to make sure the car can slide over it rather than get caught. Get passengers out of the car, then pull back slowly, listening....

I think it is worse when you pull out than when you pull in because cars seem to settle when parked, perhaps simply due to flat spots in the tires. So, it is fine as you arrive, but interferes as you leave.

Also, the lip in front of the wheels gets trashed as you pull up to curbs, so watch out.

My FAQ has a few choice links about this problem....

http://www.netwiz.net/~jds/files/a6_links.html#service</a

Really easy to do. It's something you need to think about every time you park, or you'll be crying.

Default Ya... you'll be crying like a little girly man. "look at girly man's broken bumper, boo-hoo"

it happened to me too, but didn't cry, just got a little upset...

my front Xenon was out of place as a result and had some broken pieces in it- which led to it not leveling out correctly. When I took it to a dealer, they said it would cost me around $600 to get the Xenon replaced but they ended up getting it covered under warranty (though it was technically my fault)... they even put the bumper nearly back to normal... though there's a little mismatch of seams between the front fender and bumper at the bottom, and there's the underside of the bumper that that's pulled down...

so really only solution to get it as new is replacing it (big DUH here, eh?)

be careful!!!! it could be a lot more expensive and comprehensive than you think!

cheers!
