Default In addition to drhaller's TCM programming research.

Eventually I found the official information about TCM codes. The different codes allow you to set the following things:
-Tiptronic strategy (Old, New)
-Dynamic shift program DSP (On, Off)
The first digit is market ID and transmission type (2 for USA and quattro).
So the meanings of codes are:

Code_______Tip Strategy______DSP

00002----------New------------ON
00012----------New------------OFF
00022----------Old------------ON
00032----------Old------------OFF

New tiptronic strategy means automatic shifting for some cases (like from 1 to 2 on 15 km/h when kickdown switch is not pressed).

What's the best choice for maximum performance?

Default The best choice is... (+)

...changing the whole algorythm or introduction manual transmission as an option for A6 4.2. 8-))) With transmission coding it's quite easy to decide. From my point of view any intelligence for manual shifting is a bad thing. So, we are definetely turning it off. To be DSP or not to be DSP? You should test it first. At least one reason for doing it is different versions of firmware and "non-DSP" mode could be either "economy" or "sporty" with the same probability. Time to look for VAG-com or 1552. 8-)))

Default Does sport vs economy depend on year, prod date, model?

I drive my car pretty aggressively, so the adaptive may be better for me. However, it gets into a wierd state in which it launches at first slowly then seems to downshift from 2nd to 1st and accelerate hard. Not right.

Default The source for the information is ELSA. (+)

Unfortunately that's the common way to hide the information for more recent transmissions and engines. Thus if you open the documentation for '00 A6 there is nothing about TCM coding except 00001 for Rest Of the World and 00002 for USA. But hopefully older documentation contains some pieces of information and the matter is in finding the similar unit. For instance, TCM are pretty similar for any ZF 5HP24 or 5HP18 transmission, but 4HP24(18) has the different one.
