Default I know many of the roads, and some aren't appropriate... either too much traffic, or too many ...

potholes, narrow spots, and so on. So, let me know what suggestions you have... some I may try to veto. Others, I may know and like. Still others may be new to me, I might go check out in advance.

Default Happy to share ideas....

There are pleanty of routes to chose from. It's true that roads great for Sevens (e.g. narrow and v. twisty) might not suit a fleet of Audis.

Some roads up here have pot holes you could bury a Seven in, so we usually steer well clear of those.

Horses for courses!

Default I'm particularly fond of the route last time. Here are a couple other routes...

<u>Mt. Hamilton</u> (I recommended this to an S4 group who loved it)

Started in San Jose, went out Alum Rock or McKee, up Mt Hamilton Road 130 along a
beautiful ridge, then a fairly lengthy winding drive up to the Lick

We visited the observatory for awhile, toured the historic 36-inch
telescope with James Lick buried underneath, and sat and enjoyed the
view of the south bay. Bring a jacket. The road was very winding with
some one-lane sections... a horse trailer just about blocked the road.

From the observatory, we drove down the north side down San Antonio
Valley road (scenery very southwest and rugged), then on Mines road which
heads north (looks like old west back country) towards livermore valley.


Along Mines road heading into Alameda county, there are a couple of long
stretches of one-lane road, but rarely any traffic. A few spots allow
you to get up to speed and do some real driving.

Once we reached the southern part of Livermore, we passed many wineries,
and took a few roads to our way to 84 south-west (never reaching the 580
freeway). I think we joined Tesla Rd from the south-east, which joined
South Livermore Rd, then took a few lefts in town to reach Holmes and

We follow 84 past 680 and then down Niles Canyon into Fremont, from
where we followed signs Dumbarton. If you do this trip, Fremont is a

<u>San Felipe Canyon - Paradise Valley - Hecker Pass - Seascape</u>

A nice canyon drive beginning in Evergreen in San Jose. This also
bypasses much of the traffic on 101 south through Morgan Hill, if you
are commuting that direction.

From 101, take Capitol Expressway to the NE.
Right on Aborn.
Right on San Felipe. This road goes through new housing developments and gradually

The road becomes a canyon as it goes southeast through a number of settings, and
is usually quite empty. One can drive quite fast at times, with just enough curves
to make it interesting driving. The canyon is so convenient that it can
be taken as a short sidetrip, or taken both ways to give a passenger the
chance to drive.

Metcalf, take a right.

The canyon continues. Soon, you reach a Pratt and Whitney plant, and
begin a winding drive to the southwest. You pass a motorcycle park,
then the grade becomes quite steep and windy, with a great view to the
soutwest. As you reach 101, you cross it and pass Parkway Lake before
reaching Monterey Hwy.


Paradise Valley:
A pleasant, more level drive that parallels 101 south. (This follows the route
I recommended to many who attended the Monterey ALMS last year. For details and maps,

Turning left at Monterey Hwy, watch on the right for a signal at Bailey.
Turn right. A nice, wide road through rural beauty. Pass the IBM plant
and climb into the hills.

The road dead-ends at McKean and Calero County Park. Turn left.
The road becomes Uvas. Enjoy an attractive drive past Oak Glen Ave and
past Uvas Canyon County Park. A large reservoir appears on the left
after many miles. Near the end of Uvas Reservoir, there is a large
parking area on the left, a good stop to enjoy the reservoir. Water is
low in the fall. If you reach the dam, you have just passed the parking
lot.


Hecker Pass (continues on the route to Monterey):
A somewhat crowded mountain highway that takes you through a forest,
over the summit, and into Watsonville.

Turn right off of Uvas onto Watsonville Road.
Hecker Pass 152, turn right.
This area contains some wineries and the beginnings of development.
As the highway enters a forest with lots of roadside parking to explore
the woods.
As you reach the summit, you see Mt.Madonna Inn, and a beautiful view of
Monterey Bay. After winding down to the flat among the farms, you will
pass Watsonville Speedway and Fairgrounds on the right.

To go to Santa Cruz, turn right on Holoman, and stay on it as it becomes
Airport. Turn right onto Hwy 1.


Seascape:
On the way to Santa Cruz, a nice uncrowded beach with a resort at the top of
the cliffs (with a bar for drinks!).

We turn off the highway on Larkin Valley Rd / San Andreas, and go
towards the ocean. We turn right on Seascape and follow it until it
crosses tracks, and turn left. The resort on the right is Seascape.
Park on the street and walk through our around the hotel, finding the
paved walks down to the beach. If your timing is right, you may get a
ride up by hotel carts. The bar is happy to serve non-guests. Good
Frappuccino for the non-drinkers. Backtrack just across the tracks
where you will find a nice mexican restaurant on the left.

From here, we either take 17 back, or the Bonny Doon drive to Hwy 9
(see link to directions from last time).

Default I may have the tires by then.... Where we meet depends on the route...

I'd like to meet somewhere we can grab a cuppa joe or breakfast nosh... at least a Starbucks/Noah's combo.

My wheel is being repaired. Tires here tomorrow. I'll call and push the schedule.
