Default I thought this was the tell-tale sign that the TCM has to be replaced ->

It's happened to me a few times (not in tip mode).

I read somewhere that it's the program in the Transmission Control Module, and there's a fix for this.

do a search for "TCM" or "transmission clunk"

Default hmm, is it a "fix" or a fix?

As far as I understand the fix involved putting massive hesitation into the engine to prevent the slam, not actually fixing the problem. At least that is the impression I got from this board.

In that case, I'll just take care of it myself since I already know how to avoid the slam.

Default I think you mean it chose first

Choosing first caused the revs to rise, not second.

A thunk is just a small slam, if Audi could fix the thunk they'd have the slam fixed too.

As I said before, and I understand you don't like it, but we are all powerless to do anything about it.

Default Summary of TWO Tiptronics flaws: I found my bookmarks

See the following links. The first one is a summary with links that I wrote after reading a number of posts a couple months back. My memory is poor, so I defer to it.

Default Hmm, important question.

But, there are two issues, the TCM for the 2001 2.7T, and the solenoid seal.

I'm not well read on them enough to tell which symptoms are which. But, my post above has the necessary links to find out. I hope those that are experiencing symptoms can read them and post again here.

I see. I grew up in Michigan, and a non-complete stop there was a Texas Stop.... :-)

Default Has anyone tried recoding their TCM?

The link to the message below is from the VAG-COM e-group and for an '01 Passat. I am willing to try anything at this point, the thunk/slam thing is annoying me (and my passengers).

What if the "new" automatic downshift programming has problems with our "coming almost to a stop and then accelerating" use-case scenario? Perhaps by disabling this "new" programming we can "fix" the thunk/slam issue... or at least point fingers at this "new" programming as the cause.

I plan to give this a try on the weekend on my '01 2.7T.

BTW, I checked the current Bentley manual and there is no hint of what the coding values are for "test" purposes. The only valid codings are:

00000 - "coding not valid"
00002 - "for USA/Canada"
00001 - "for rest of world"

As you can see, all the leading digts are 0 in the "documented" valid codings. I wonder what fun one could have with the right documentation :-).
