Strange problem with my car
I brought my car into the dealer for the 5,000 mile service and it has now been there for eight days. My 2006 4.2 s-line was running great but there had been a slight but noticable vibration in the steering wheel at idle. However, the vibration would go away when the AC was switched on. Additionally, there was a minor but audible clicking noise coming from the engine compartment that would also go away when the AC was turned on. I asked them to check it out. At first, the techinicians tried to tell me it was the FSI. I remineded them that my car does not have FSI. They then told me that the "high performance V8" always makes the steering wheel vibrate in a coarse manner. They assured me that the noise was "odd" but would not cause any harm to my car. I told them to check it out anyway. After three days, an engine removal, replacement of the air conditioning "output shafts(?)", and a chevy aveo loaner(I'm serious), I drove two hours back to the dealer and was given a proper loaner. Furthermore, the dealer told me that they were flying in technicians from audi of america to figure out the problem. The AoA technicians have been working on it for three days and still have yet to isolate the clicking noise and vibration problem. Has anybody else had a similar problem? If so, what was the end result?

Right after reminding them it doesn't have FSI I would have taken it to a different stealership.
For the tech not to know immediatley that the car doesn't have FSI is inexcusable. I definitely would not let him do any more work on the car.

Re: Strange problem with my car
I informed them that I had previously owned two V8 equipped vehicles that had zero vibration. They had no response. That is when they reluctantly decided to further inspect my car. I get sick of technicians who try to BS me and us audi owners.

slight vibration
in my 06.4.2 sl, ended up being a vacum pump that was not properly attached. The offending part was down low in the engine compartment, near the firewall. It made a slight metallic vibration that would have been disguised by the AC. I could replicate it by shutting the pass. door and listening carefully, ear to cowl (or pass. wiper).
My v8 is very quiet, and the steering has absolutely no vibration. This sounds like a bad engine mount or suspension bushing.
Wishing you luck and am impressed that the co has gone to great lengths to fix it.
