Default p0346 Camshaft code.. After valve cover gaskets..No engine noise, missfires,

Had indy replace both VCGs, change plugs and put fresh 0w40 mobil 1 euro formula in the 3.2 Q today..... Now car is a code that won't go away. Not even for 1 start.. it remains constantly. p0346. Indy can't figure it out, we swapped all the cam sensors left to right, however we did not replaced the camshaft solenoids from side to side. The car does not make a rattle noise at startup indicating timing chain.. no misfires or other codes. When you clear the code, it takes like 30 seconds of cranking, other than that no other issues.. what could it be?

It could be the camshaft position solenoid valve (Part Number: 06E 109 257 J). There are 4 of them and I'd inspect if you see an issue with any one.

Since it will impact the actual sensor and will cause the sensor to throw the code, even though the issue could be with the valve.

Good luck

One thing to log with VAG-COM is the "specified" versus "actual" position of the VVT solenoid. It seems that the solenoids can get "stuck" in position due to sludge, and the 5v the ECU sends to the solenoid can't get it unstuck.

You might try giving the solenoid in question the "electroshock therapy" and see if it helps (12V sometimes can get the solenoid "shocked" into moving again). If it helps, I'd replace that solenoid.

Fixed, the cam sensor wire on top of the motor and another wire connected to the intake flap actuator were crossed (identical plugs, same wire length).. this was a bear to figure out. SO glad its fixed!

I've bumped into a similar issue myself on my 05 3.2. The plugs for the pass side intake cam sensor and the low fuel pressure sensor were the same shape and wire length. Used vag com to figure out which way is correct - I checked beforehand what signals run on the wires to avoid frying something and both had +5v, sig and gnd so swapping them would not cause a problem, just implausible signals.
On the 07 and up they changed the four cam position sensors to a different, smaller 3-pin plug.
