Just got the news from audi that my engine is blown. the timing chain tensioner went bad and caused the engine to skip bending all of my intake and exhaust valves. possible cylinder damage as well. I am in need of my engine to be rebuilt or a replacement engine. Any recommendations of companies where I can get a decent price on a rebuild or another used engine or rebuilt used engine would be greatly appreciated. as of now im looking at $3800 for a used engine I have no idea how it runs and prolly have to strip it down and check it all before install and seems high for something of that nature. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

Assuming you are in the USA, I'd look at http://car-part.com/ for engines. Also, depending upon your location, someone else might be able to guide you to a local junk yard that specializes in Euro cars.

Found a guy on ebay that has a engine with 87k on it and comes with everything attached for $3250 and 6 month warranty. I think that's a decent price out of what I've seen so far. Pretty much pull the shot one out and drop in the new one. Thinking about replacing the timing chain and tensioners before install so hopefully I don't have to do this again. What do you guys think about that? I am new to audi so any input helps. Anything else should be done to the engine while its out before install?

The tensioners are scary on our cars and you should replace them on the replacement engine. Did you get any warning or noises before your tensioners failed? Want to know what to keep an ear out for.

Nope no warning what so ever. I left the car outside for 2 wks in the cold while waiting for a rebuilt abs module to come. when it came in the battery was dead and wouldn't start. cranked but no firing...

I'm trying to understand exactly what happened. It appears that the battery was dead, so you jumped it and then timing chain had a failure which caused the bent valves...is that correct?

As for replacement engines, any engine you get should be fully rebuilt. Don't simply go with a used engine that hasn't been rebuilt and drop it in your car. Since, you will have no idea as to when it will implode. This is moot advice, if you decide to get a crate engine...but at that cost, you might as well get a new car

There are a number of folks in various parts of the country who do engine rebuilds on Audi's. Where are you located? That way we might be able to suggest a good rebuild specialist. Furthermore, there are online places that sell engines, but one of the best local resources is the local German car engine places or junk yards which specialize in German autos.

Trust me it makes no sense to me as well. This is all according to audi for what happened. I got my abs module rebuilt so I parked it outside waiting for that for about 2 wks. It drove and ran just had no and or traction control. I messed up and. Didn't start it daily in this horribly cold IN winter and it died. Somehow this all went awry while it was sitting or the first crank trying to jump it. I would love to buy a new crate engine but just not possible and I've only had the car for 3 months as it is. Can't sell it as is or prolly loose about 6 or 7 grand on the stupid car. My plan is to buy a used engine and go through the whole thing and replace atleast the timing chains and tensioners and prolly water pump.

Have then check the engine compression, But overall if your going to replace the timing chain and tensioners you should be good. Also once your at it replace some of the know gaskets known for leaking oil. But that sounds like it's great deal. Just make sure that it's the same engine code.

You should realize your vehicle is a C6. Furthermore, as far as doing the work yourself, there's a write-up someone on this forum did specifically around the timing chain replacement.

Oh yeah, and get yourself a Bentley...trying to do this work without one would be a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe_hunt" target="_blank">fool's errand</a> .
