I test drove a '04 A6 2.7L and a '05 A6 3.2L back–to–back for comparison...
Because the C5 was so similar to my '96 A6 FWD Avant, and the C6 was much larger than either the C4 or C5, I eventually ended up with a '06 A6 Avant that came off a 3-yr lease last year. The car was equipped with the adaptive air suspension, NAV, and tech/prem/cold weather packages. The 3.2L FSI V6 has plenty of power to move the heavier Avamt, so the sedan will be slightly faster and get slightly better fuel economy. I have found that the air suspension is beneficial to keep from scrapping the bottom of the front bumper cover due to its very low clearance. The air suspension also allows you, if you choose, to have the feel of the sport suspension that comes with the S–Line package, or set it back to the comfort level. So, based on my experience for the last year of C6 ownership, I would recommend the adapative air suspension as one of the things to look for, even though it may have mainentance issues down the road.
I wouold also recommend the '07 over the '06 as the '07 was the best year for features of the C6 platform to date, e.g., advance parktronic w/ camera, front seat storage bins, headlight washers, etc. In '08, Audi removed the front seat storage bins (and dropped the headlight washers I believe) to lower the production cost.

The 06 and 07's have parktronic, front seat storage bins, and headlight washers.

I've got Adaptive Air Suspension and have had virtually zero problems..I read allot about the A8 since it comes standard with AAS and actually never found a negative post in the forums on that system going back to 05 so I was convinced it was a solid. The C6 series A6 learned and fixed the few issues the C5 had and by 06 it went way up in consumer ratings in reliability. The wonderful 3.2 FSI can get amazing fuel mileage I might add..on long drives with varying roads but mostly freeway I averaged 28mpg using cruise. I'd bet the 4.2 will get excellent MPG also mainly because of the great transmission and gearing but the 3.2 will also surprise you with it's great torque especially when I (rarely) use the paddle wheels..it seems to really hit the mark around 3500..then shoots to RL before you know it and your so far past the speed limit you'd better do some quick thinking and make sure that radar is working! but.. I usually drive it like it really is..a world class AWD luxury car and enjoy the hell out of it knowing what it's capible of. 07's are comming off leases..that would be a good choice and save you a bundle and mainly BE PATIENT.

get a 4.2 you will not regret... many (not all) who have gotten the 3.2 wish they would have gotten the 4.2 had they done it all over again...
if you're really worried about gas mileage get a TDI engine audi. the a6 is heavy thus you lose big time on gas mileage.
the fun factor of a 4.2 > 3.2 IMHO
you should be able to pickup an 07 4.2 for around or under 30K with CPO ...

I have the 3.2 but on the highway it makes all its torque in 3rd gear but usually if you leave it in D or even S mode it will only drop down to 4th gear when you floor it so I've been switching mine manually to 3rd gear. It is not hard to go fast in either car. I test drove the 4.2 and the power comes on more easily and effortlessly but I wouldn't say it felt that much faster (even though it is faster). You have to decide if you want to spend the extra $$$ for the V8. One thing that I do really like about the V8 is the sound.
If you want a real kick in the pants big sedan you'd have to go AMG/M5. Even the S6 with the V10 lambo engine has been criticized for not being that fast.

I agree with Jazz, you won't regret the 4.2 and you may regret the 3.2 if you like power. In addition, if you find a 4.2 it will likely be better optioned since it came with more items standard and if the original owner opted for the cost of a 4.2 they may have also opted for some of the remaining options.

haven't broken in the 3.0T yet so too soon
to fully compare, but the 3.0T is plenty peppy off the line, with quicker throttle respnse than the 4.2 FSI. And it doesn't hold first gear when cold like the 4.2 does, so I no longer need to manually upshift in the morning. Also plenty of torque for highway passing, but I've yet to go WOT so I really can't tell the ultimate difference. It's certainly easy enough to go triple digits even w/o exceeding 4,000 RPM.
The super charger sounds nice enough, but it doesn't match that V8 burble. Oh, well, presumably my milage will be better.
