Have your friend check Koni FSD struts and shocks. They will soften up the ride without much of a degradation in handling. My GTI stock suspension was firm before I switched out to Neuspeed springs and Koni FSD shocks. It rides much better than our S6 and handles better to boot.
If I had to do it all over again, I would just go with the Koni FSD struts and shocks.
