Default Water Cooled Alternator?

I was told by a friend one of the most expensive engine componates is the alternator, I thought he was kidding..he said it was well designed and was a fairly rare issue but extremely hard to work on and that it was also water cooled..water cooled?? Yup..water cooled alternator. Question has anyone here had to do any work on on and exactly how does it cool...does it use the radiator water or have it own system?

FWIW the 3.2 is NOT water cooled. The 4.2 and the V10 are and it is a part of the regular coolant system.

Thanks GK, I tried to find anything regarding the alternator in eBahn using the search engine and got zero results..although my 3.2 doesn't have the water cooled unit as you mentioned you'd think I'd find something...anyway, thanks for the clarification, if anyone using this software gets results using "alternator" let me know

This is too much!

Although a small but very interesting piece of info on the liquid cooled alternator it unfortunately showed me there's virtually no information on critical part's of the Audi engine in the Bentley Manual or at least nobody has found it. A service manual not having something as important as an ALTERNATOR is pathetic yet a company like Subaru at half the price of the Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, BMW and which can not only go anywhere and do anything they can do and usually better, has service manuals which are so detailed you could build you own car from them!!! no wonder Warren Buffet drives one personally! These overly complicated, lack of information "elite" status symbols which purposly try and hide information, quite frankly, smart people are getting wise to this.

Alternator or Generator can be found in the Electrical Equipment of the Bentley manual, section 27.

Liquid cool alternator has been around for a long time. My 1998 BMW 740IL alternator is liquid (engine coolant) cool unit.
