Default Correct winter tire size

My (wife's) C6 has 245/45/17 tires as the stock summer size. For a narrower winter tire, the 225/50/17 has the closest diameter. I am in New England and will be running a full winter tire, the Hakka R2, and narrower is better.

Any thoughts on alternate sizes? I have a set of 17" OEM wheels waiting for tires, so I am pretty much dialed in on 17s.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I've been running Blizzak 245/45R-18's on my S6 in the winter for 2 seasons, just put on for this season. We had two huge storms last year with over 15" of snow and they performed flawlessly. No issues plowing through 2-3 ft drifts, once I remembered to turn off the traction control and let the Quattro work! I'm sure that a narrower tire would be a better performer overall, however the 245's work well on a Quattro and still preserve a nice look. Let it Snow!

urs6, be certain the tire you focus on has adequate load capacity. Outside rolling diameter is just one aspect (no pun intended) to consider.

Tire Rack is pretty good at guiding you thru appropriate +/- wheel diameter fitments...or call Gary.

(We're running 16" winter wheels on our '06 Avant.)

Agreed. The 98 Xl load rating is correct for the Audi.

I picked up a set of OEM 17" wheels over the summer...would have considered 16" too, but couldn't find any really good looking wheels.

Unfortunately TR doesn't carry the Nokians, or I'd already have made the call!

I just dropped my stock 17s to get my Nokian's put on them. I'll be running 245/45/17 and should be fine.

BTW, Nokian R2s can be had at Discount Tire...

Default 225/50/17 should work fine

I just purchased a set of Michelin X-Ice4 in 225/50/17 since it is the size that Audi uses as the official winter tire package for the C6 A6.
