Considering 08' A6 4.2 S-Line
I currently own an 04' A4 and once upon a time had an 06 S4 (miss that one) and am looking at a larger Audi. Currently the top of my list is a C6 A6 although I'm not decided on the engine.
When I got rid of my 06 S4, it had a bit over 50k on it so I never had to worry about much in terms of maintenance. I'm taking a strong look at the car linked to below but am concerned a bit about the miles http://www.autofind.com/dealer/detai...V74F38N182125/. From the Carfax it looks to have been decently maintained, although there's only record of oil changes every 10k miles (I always changed the S4's oil every 4-5k). I'd also change the tiptronic fluid immediately if I got that car.
I remember with the S4, which had the previous gen 4.2L, you had to worry about the AC compressor locking up and some issues with the alternator (overheat) and starter (didn't work when cold). There was always the timing chain tensioner that seemed to be hit or miss in terms of reliability as well.
Does the A6 suffer from all the same issues? Or were they pretty much ironed out by 08'? It has an FSI engine, so I'm also guessing the carbon build up is just as much an issue as with any other direct injection engine. Do the high-pressure fuel pumps eat cam shafts like in the 2.0T?
There doesn't seem to be a lot of chatter either way on the forums but I'm guessing that has to do with the popularity of an A6 vs. and S4/RS4.
I'd appreciate any comments folks have on the specific car or general advice.

I have a 07 A6 4.2 S-Line. I just had the 55K service 2 months ago, it's first major service I had to pay for. I had the extended warranty, so all my oil changes and service was taken cared of before that. Unfortunately, carbon buildup is a real issue.
The check engine light came on at about 53K and would not go away. I am blessed with an awesome dealer, and they addressed it with a brand-new intake manifold. Because of the extended warranty, I did not have to pay for any of the parts and labor. They also loaned me a new 2013 C7 3.0T to use addressed the problem. It took them 2 weeks. After that, the car performed like new.
I've had no other problems other that this. If the carbon build-up on the car you are looking at was never addressed, it will be a future problem.
I've experienced none of the other issues you have mentioned.
