Default Checked out 3.0T at dealer today...

This was my first time getting up close to it..I liked the 2-tone amaretto seats which was the only significant interior change.
The rear lights were nice, but overall, exterior changes were too subtle to get me excited about it, which was good news to me! They prob look more striking lit up at night. I definitely prefer my front end with round foglights over the new rectangular.
So IMHO the only real incentive to getting into the '09 is the engine, not the revised looks.

The car was loaded with Prestige package. I also noticed it had cold weather package, which deletes shift paddles.. What are they thinking??

they were (correctly) thinking pierreb would never be caught dead using shift paddles.

Default paddle question?

Again, both of my '08 4.2 HID controllers, igniters et al... need replacing. They gave me a A3 loaner with paddles. Question, once you engage the + or - paddle how do you get back to "D" drive? So far, I've been popping the shifter in and out of tip mode to get it back.

Default Your solution is the fastest, but on the A6, it does go back to D after a bit..

For me, if I chose a gear, but then don't vary my speed or turn, the car decides I'm finished playing and reverts to D. But I'll often nudge the lever from tip back to D again, because the car purposely waits a while to take over in case you're just waiting.
A3, with its dual clutch transmission, may be different however..

It takes 30-60 seconds to revert to normal Drive when you engage the paddles in Drive

Default the whole point is not to take your hands off the wheel

perhaps a disengage button would be a good idea!

Default You only nudge the lever once you're settling back into a cruise...

....and the transmission programming makes sense - it holds the gear you've chosen.

But if I was just changing down for a turn or to pass on a two lane road, I'll switch the transmission lever from tip back to drive to get it back in high gear.

If you're still driving hard, then yes, you don't want to take your hands off the wheel, and you continue using the paddles to change gear.

Default I use the tip very often - engine braking (saves my $900 brakes-:)

so I'd like to switch back and forth between tip and "D" and I'm quite happy using the shifter. If I use paddles, it makes more sense not to have to take my hands off the wheel. NYC & Jersey driving - disengage switch make more sense in those conditions.
