Default Center Console Armrest Plastic Latch Broken

The Frau is unhappy again.

The latch broke on my center console armrest - you know, the one that houses the non-existant phone adapter for my non-compatible to '05 A6 phone. A replacement console, under warranty, is on order as I type this.

Upon examination of the latch piece I am dissapointed that Audi engineers allowed this part to have such a thin amount of plastic in a critical stress point. I am a design engineer, myself, and I would have used a metal die-casting instead (like magnesium). I am concerned when it is fixed it will still be susceptable to fracture again - and I didn't do anything to abuse it to cause the latch fracture in the first place.

I think I'll file this one away with the inadequate MMI mouse ****. My surgical precision epoxy job is ten times better than a replacement with the same flawed materials (see below).

Wow! Awesome performance, handling, acceleration, speed, and style - with cheap plastic ***** and latches.

Audi, if you're listening, I'd pay a little more to prevent this kind of stuff. Kick it up a notch!

John

PS: MMI **** Fix for those interested.

If anyone has their MMI mouse **** come off, I have a sure fix using clear, two-part, 5-minute epoxy and a toothpick:

1.) Clean mating surfaces with rubbing alcohol - let dry.

2.) Mix epoxy and apply sparingly (about the size of a drop of water) to mating surfaces of inside MMI **** and same to console MMI **** shaft. (DO NOT DRIP ON ANYTHING! - Use wax paper or something to shield the area if needed.)

3.) Carefully press the MMI **** back into place with a little bit of pressure. If the fracture was uneven you must align the bits.

4.) Let sit overnight.

All fixed and better than original since the epoxy will hold up better than existing material interface.

Default Had mine changed under warranty.

Due to the lid slamming down frequently - no damping mechanism.

I had to have mine replaced also, with very little use of the latch

Damn thing. Mine just broke too. Too thin for such a high-use piece.

Does anyone know if Audi AG fix these problem areas in the '07 models?

Default Mine broke too

Mine broke in the first year I had my '05. The dealership made a big deal out of it, saying they had to get special permission to get it fixed under warranty. I agree the thing is poorly designed. I am extremely gentle when closing the arm rest now, and it is holding up just fine.

The TSB for the center arm rest is in the TSB library in my signature. I have pasted in the link for the individual TSB
