Adaptive Lights - auto-leveling sensors problem
In troubleshooting an "Adaptive Light Defective" message this week, I've narrowed it down to a problem in communication with the auto-leveling sensors.
Here's the error detected in VAG-COM:
1 Fault Found:
01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - MIL ON
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 11100101
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1
Reset counter: 34
Mileage: 194744 km
Time Indication: 0
Date: 2014.04.22
Time: 21:03:19
I've gone through this series of troubleshooting in VAG-COM:
1. Attempt the adaptation routine by clearing the error message, then immediately starting the adaptation routine. It errors out.
2. To rule out the light positioning motors, through VAG-COM, I manually tested each motion test successfully
3. Found this article: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/01539
I'm now thinking it's a problem with the sensors, or hopefully and easy broken wire issue. Where can I locate the auto-leveling sensors? I understand they are mounted to suspension components on other Audis. Is that the case for the A6?
I'm planning on pulling out the light assemblies this weekend to examine those components.
Anyone gone down this same path as I'm going down?
Also, as a side note, my lights typically give off that annoying shake, fluttering pattern. Since this error popped up this week, no more shake or fluttering. I assume it's because the motors are disabled by the current problem.

I was able to resolve it. I examined the auto-leveling sensors and took the light assemblies out to examine for failed wiring, motors, etc. I found nothing wrong, but took advantage of having the assemblies out and replaced the HID and DRL bulbs. After everything was put back in place, the same error message was present. It took 3 adaptation attempts before the sequence didn't result in the error message (finally!).
BTW, if you're looking for an inexpensive DRL with the similar color as the HIDs, these bulbs by Hella work great:
