Default 4.2 V8 vs. 3.2 V6

I have a 2005 3.2 and love it. Plenty of power (although a little more wouldn't be bad) But one of the things I like most is I can go nearly 600 miles on a single tank of gas (on the highway driving all day). I also have an A4 3.0 and can barely get 340 miles on a tank (more city driving but still) not so much due to mileage but because the tank is so small.

I am going to trade in the A4 and am thinking of getting another A6. Can some tell me, real world what sort of range the 4.2 A6 has. I imagine it will be a little less than the V6 unless they put a bigger tank in it.

Not sure about the V8, but I can go 550 miles on a single tank of gas in my V6 3.0T A6.

I have seen over 550 on the computer when driving mostly highway. A few years ago i had the 3.2 and i saw more than 600 on the computer. Not sure how accurate the car computer is though. These high numbers only come up after driving on the highway for a while before filling up.

The computers mileage is a joke. I can get the computer to read 600. But i cant get anywhere near that number in the real world. Actual mileage 300 around town, 425 on the highway in my 4.2. Obviously driving style and speed changes numbers dramatically.

The computer can be accurate if you calibrate the consumption but in my experience it is a little optimistic as delivered by Audi. I have had two 3.2's and on one the mileage was high by 5% and on the other it was high by 7%. Using VAG-COM you can adjust the consumption to make the values correct. Having done that I have seen up to 26 mpg on the highway at around 70mph which corresponds to aruond 550 miles/tank full. My average for commuting, local trips and the occassional 50-100 mile highway jaunt is 21.9mpg.

I own a 2005 4.2Q with almost 97K miles.

I commute 25 miles everyday one way. 10 miles local and 15 miles highway.

In warm weather when I cruise at fixed speeds with a light right foot, the computer says I am getting 25~26mpg.

Real world though is a little different. I usually would get 420~450 miles before I fill up to about 18~19 gallons. I guess this translates to about 22~23mpg on average but this is in warm weather only.

During cold seasons I see a notable drop of about 2~3mpg which will bring down to total distance to about 360~380

400 miles is very close to daily common use with non-hard foot I drove to Paris in january and it´s around 650 miles. My average consuptiom was something around 30mpg. During every day use is that number much smaller, around 24mpg. And if you are enjoying all the horses under the hood, count with refueling every 2 hours )

some of you guys here must be driving some other variation of A6. I do around 60% local and 40% high way. My local roads are consisted of straight road with red lights every other miles or so. I can sometimes literally set cruise control to 40mph and go straight all the way. That means i should get mileage similar to what my car can do on highway. I normally fill up the car just under 1/4 tank and I consistently get around 320 or by then. After any fillup, my car normally give the reading of 450 miles range. 3.2 Quattro here.

I'm assuming this is all highway driving? I can get around 28-29 on highway but I get measly 15mpg in stop and go traffic in Southern California with my 3.0T. I average around 18.5mpg combined. A little worse than my 3.2 when I used to average around 21.5 with similar driving.

By the way, I saw a drop in mpg when I replaced my stock 18" wheels to 19" wheels. I assume this is due to heavier wheels.
