3.2 engine noise
All,
I have a 100k mile 2005 A6 quattro with the 3.2. It exhibits a whining sound that follows engine rpm. I have done all the usual services and even the carbon cleaning and now the famous hesitation when starting out is gone and the shifting is "better". The whine sound seems to be getting louder (or I am now hyper sensitive to it). My neighbor has the same year car and his does not make the same noise. It sounds like either a torque converter whine or a power steering pump whine like a Ford would make. (relax everyone, I do know that the power steering is electric on this car). It is noticeable from both inside and outside the car. Is there something that is common to these engines that might be the issue? Timing chain tensioners, serpentine belt tensioners, something? I have crawled under the car with panel off and it seems to be coming from the "front" of the engine toward the radiator. Again, it varies with RPM. Any suggestions would be helpful. Of course the dealer says that this is "normal". I would not trust those clowns to work on my lawn mower.
