Default Would 20W-50 oil for 2.8L be suitable?

I am currently using Mobil One (Full Syntetic offcourse) 0W-40 in my car and because i just yesterday hit the 100k Mark, was thinking about switching to 20W-50. Reason is because it is thicker and think that it would lubricate better and quite down the engine a little bit. Anyone using that type of Oil viscosity in a 2.8L?

Default That's a bit heavy.

Why go heavier? are you having oil consumption issues?

Default stick with the 0W-40... but get the Mobil 1 Delvac SUV formula.. 5W-30 no longer

meets the european standards or whatever they call it.

Default no.....too thick...

long pump-ups. Stick w/ 0W-40 or 5W-30. You can get a list off of Audi's website under the owner section of approved oils, or give your friendly service dude/ette a call.

Default A comment....

I would just use thicker M1 instead. We use thicker M1 in the summer(15w-50), and use thinner for the winter. Our 2.8 , has about 80k on it.
The oil venturies are too thin for std. 20w-50 in newer Audi motors. With Syn. oil used, they are good for 200k.

The latest Tech Bulletin specifies 5w-40 for synthetic of almost every make. Try and find 5w-40 that meets VW requirements!!

Default M1 15w-50 would likely be OK in the hottest summer months where the temp never gets below 60 F.

No point in using anything thicker than 5w-40 (obviously 0w-40 is OK) in winter. Dino 20w-50 is crap - it shears out too much when its hot and is WAAYYY too thick when its cold. You'll put the oil filter in bypass mode and take too long to pump up oil to top of engine as the others have said.

Default Valvoline makes a good 5w-40 synth, but it is special order at most parts stores I frequent. Just

use M1 0w-40 or the M1 5w-40 SUV formula and be done with it!
