Why are the early A6 2.7T so cheap?
I am looking for a car in the low $10k range, the ~2000 A6 2.7T came across with a lot to offer. 2.7 TT engine, awd, excellent interior, and relatively low in mileage (~100k range).
What are the major ticket items to watch for when shopping for these cars? Am I looking at a $10k car that I will need to put in another $5k soon?
Is the 6spd a better bet? Coming from a BMW 325i, how balance is the handling? I found a few A6 4.2 as well for a little more money, is that a better buy?
Your input is appreciated.

Re: Why are the early A6 2.7T so cheap?
I'm in the same boat. I am looking for an A6 and like the look of the 4.2 but really want the upgrade-ability and ease of modification of the turbo motor. I was looking at an S4 twin turbo but I am tall and prefer the leg room and trunk space of the A6. My wife and I will use the car to travel and take vacations and she will probably drive it everyday while I'm at work.
I could pick up a 2.8 or 3.0 cheaper but I really want the get up and go of a turbo 6 or a v8. The V8 has the better looks with the fenders and the door "wings". But How much faster is it if any than the turbo 6? I mean 50 hp more but what about the torque? And then if you chip the 2.7t is it faster than the 4.2L?
I would prefer the 2002 because of the dual pipes in the rear but I could always replace the rear bumper and get an aftermarket exhaust for the later model from APR.
I plan on lowering the car, tinting the windows, debadging the A6 and engine size, and then installing either 18" or 19" wheels.
Any main differences between 2000-2002 besides the rear bumper? Wasn't 2000 the first year for the 2.7t and 4.2?

The 4.2 (stock) has 300hp and 295 ft lbs of Tq.
But it is actually a lil bit slower than the 2.7t (especially the manual version.) That is due to the extra 300 or so pounds that was added by the V8, etc :P And yes...2000 was the first year for 4.2's and 2.7's.
