What oil do you use in your Audi?
In my 2002 Audi A6 Quattro 2.7tt, I use the Mobil 1 5w30. After some reasearch I am realizing there are much better oils out there. What do some of you guys use/recommend?
I have narrowed it down to:
Motul High Performance 10w40.
VS.
Ravenol 5w40
Both have Motor Oil Spec Vw 502 00 , 505 00 , 505 01. (This is the correct one for my audi right?)
I also have been considering the Ravenol 5w50 High Performance racing formula as I will be getting a chip and new exhaust and other upgrades soon.

Ravenol High Performance: http://www.blauparts.com/proddetail....od=J1A1700%2DA
Thanks guys.

VAG has written into their spec(s) a minimum "thickness" criteria. The majority of the "5W30" oils are energy conserving and won't meet the thickness criteria. Most of the Owner's Manual for these cars still suggest a 5W40 meeting VAG 502.00 when available. There certainly are other viscosities available as seen when reviewing the list. I'd guess that the Mobil 1 0W40 is the most common and easily obtained. It stacks up nicely against any competition and can be found in 5qt jugs and 1 qt bottles at W*mart for cheap $$$. Personally, I wouldn't spend my time chasing after the other oils you mention unless you can get a screaming deal on the approved Ravenol incl. shipping charges (see Blauparts.com).

King, the only written spec I've ever seen for your engine is VAG 502.00. As long as 502.00 is written on the bottle, and the oil also appears on VAG's long "approved" list, then you're good to go. It's that simple. No further analysis required.

I recently started using castrol 0w40 from Belgium or bc Belgium castrol. Seems like a very good oil so far.
I'm surprised that the motul 10w is 502 approved. Majority of 502 are 0w and 5w

Oh, no,not again.
Seriously, read the archives. I have written volumes, and i cant write as good info in the time i have now.
But keep in mind:
1 wear and fuel economy are at odds. Manufacturers spec thinner oils for fuel economy, but wear goes up
2. turbo cars are tough on oil
3. Wide ratio ranges (e.g.: 5w50, 5w40, 5w30) are difficult to achieve without viscosity index improver. They shear upon hearing the words "heat and pressure". Better choices (for shear, wear) would be 10w40, 10w30, etc.
In fact, i saw UOA evidence that a top-name conventional 10w30 outperformed the same brand's synthetic 5w30 in the same car, in terms of wear and shear down of the 100 degC cSt number.
Some of the very expensive 5w40s are fine too, although their 10w40s would be even better.

While M1 0w40 is in fact fine, i disagree, and have stated the technical reasons many, many times and provided, in writing, UOA evidence that my assertions are correct.
0w are simply too thin to be ideal.
Caveat: if you live in a very cold climate, i retract my comments. But then, dont reach for such a wide range, use a 5w30 rather than 0w40 - it will have fewer VIIs and be more stable.
yes, today's wide range synthetics require some VIIs.

Yes, I agree about the "spread" you reference and they (the engine mfr) still lean towards a "5W40" when available.
We do see that the M1 0W40 is not only the initial factory fill for many mfrs, but also suggested as the oil used over the engine's lifetime. It's generally what's used at Audi and MBz dealerships in my area and they also offer it for sale at the parts desk.
The latest iteration of this Mobil product is very, very good. I can't see any reason to continue over-thinking something so simple and obvious. I think it's fair to say that just about any modern, synthetic oil xW40 oil will suit these cars well.
