What the heck is this?
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/87586/eng109_tbclean1a1.jpg"></center><p>in the image above, I marked the pipe in RED dots. This is right on the vacuum switch plate. this is broken on my car and I am wondering what it is and where it goes.
When I held it, it was so brittle that it fell apart.
Thanks to Kris Hansen for the picture.

Re: What the heck is this?
It look like the hard plastic hose going to the EGR driver side . Standing in front of the engine (the way this picture was taken), it run along the 3 injectors on the right top side from that plate , turn right in the front of the head . You can replace that broken section with a soft tube ( emission tubing ) from Autozone or any other the size is 5mm(13/64")ID X 9mm(23/64") Those are the reading from the left over I got here in my tool box Good luck

On my ATQ, I'm pretty dang sure that line goes under the driver's injector rail...
...over to the front of the engine and down to the vacuum reservoir behind the driver's headlight.
At the bottom of this picture, you can see the hard, black plastic line that it connects to, left of the fuel rail and right of the intake manifold.

You don't mean the breather hose when you say 'hard black plastic line'?
My car's in the shop now, so I can't look at how it's set up, but I recall that particular line on my car being brittle as well, it branches off from the Y, with the other line going into the little metal box with the blue connector. It goes under the metal box and just disappears into the engine, never looked to see where it went.

In my picture, at the bottom right, there is......... [edited, now with pictures]
Intake Manifold][hard plastic vacuum line][fuel rail][injector wiring][PCV breather tube]
The PCV tube is the one that looks like a snake's belly (striped).
If I recall correctly, the the line you're talking about detaches from the Y and proceeds under the fuel rail, along the top of the valve cover, then between the valve cover and the timing belt cover, down over behind the headlight.
<img src="http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a143/indischrot/audi/hose1.jpg">
The line you want is the purple line, right?
<img src="http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a143/indischrot/audi/hose2.jpg">
Here it is in the red. You can see where mine snapped during a valve cover gasket change.

It just occured to me that I'm not sure which line hooks up to the Fuel Pressure Regulator. I may be completely wrong on where that line goes.......

Yes... you are correct. Vacuum tank.
Just checked the manual.
After the Y, the line branches out and one end goes to the solenoid valve (rectangular metal box you see) and the other goes a long way to the vacuum tank, which is a (green?) thing that looks like three tennis ***** fused end to end.
