Universal cat. converter with a 2000 A6?
I have a check engine light on that comes back with a fault for the cat. converter. The dealership wants $1400 to replace (no thanks). I thought someplace like Meinike would be much cheaper but they are telling me $900-$1000. What the heck is the Audi converter made of? Gold?!
The question is can a universal cat. converter be used? If so the Meinike quote is more in the $300 range. I have a 2000 A6 2.7T (only one converter...the dual started with I think the 2001 model).
Thanks

Universal cats can be used, but they might still throw a code. I'm planning on
installing my new cats soon. I'll see whether or not they still throw a code. If they do, I'll install a diode in each of the harnesses.

who told you you only have one cat. converter?
actually you have 4. one pre-cat on each side (2 total) right after the turbos, and one main cat on each side right before the cat-back split in the exhaust. the pre-cats rarely go bad, but many people still like to remove them all together. the main cats are what i think you are refering to and yes an aftermarket cat *should* work... havent seen any actually tested but all the manufactures claim they will replace an OEM cat just fine

LOL. You're a little mixed up. I'll give you the full run down on your exhaust.
After the exhaust manifold on each bank, you have a pre-cat. Further down on each downpipe you have a main cat. After that, the pipes from both sides of the car merge into a center resonator. And finally, the pipes split back apart and are routed to 2 mufflers (one on each side of the car.) Hope that helps.

I don't mean to be a pain but I have to ask. Are you SURE the 2000 A6 has two mufflers? I'm working at my desk & the car is parked too far to go look right now but I was almost sure my model had one muffler. I think the 2001 model changed to a two muffler approach.
In any case I'll check after work.
