Default Transmission Issues

I couldn't sleep....was thinking about having to fork out cash for a new car. I've been searching the forum, but can't find my specific issue. Here's the situation:

a6 s-line 2.7T
2004
83K

Outside temp - 80 or higher (Texas summers)
Engine temp - warm (driving for at least an hour)
Sitting at a stop light, with traffic around
Upon accelerating, it shifts VERY hard from 2nd to 3rd gear. It feels like it like it slips, then it clunks into 3rd very hard. It's not a good feeling.

I've spent 4k on my car in the last 12 months, and I'm close to running out of patience.

Based on the forum, changing the trans fluid looks like the first step. What's the likelihood this will address the issue?

Also, if this doesn't address the issue, what's next?

Plug codes from engine and trans, post codes. Check fluid level.

No codes! I haven't checked trans fluid yet.

I found this link this morning. Sounds similar:

That link is for a CVT transmission. I doubt that you have a CVT.

And you should be very very thankful you don't, not one of Audi's finest ideas.

What are you using to pull codes?
Are you checking the trans or just the engine.

No codes is hard to believe.

I'll have them re-pull the codes at the shop and circle back. Thanks!

I had my guy pull the codes. He found NO transmission issues at all. He recommended a transmission fluid/filter change. Quoted $400. Does that seem reasonable?

He also sold me hard on keeping my car. He said all the expensive work is done (like the timing belt).

That's not bad on this service if he is using the right parts and fluid, the cost of "right" material is in the 300 range.
Then there is the question of the service being done right with out the very disastrous flush procedure, please make sure that is not being done.
