Hi,I checked for this and could have missed this in this forum,also the tire forum,I have 17x8 rims from the 4.2 with an offset of 35 and would like to fit 245/40 tires to a 99 A6 Avant without rubbing issues.Would these clear the; i)suspension? ii)fenders?Does anyone have any first hand experience as all I have read is fitments with 235's?

Bottomline: Several people state they've had issues going wider than 235 and Tirerack recommends going no wider. Others say you can go as wide as 255 with the higher offset of the 4.2 rims. The latter approach raises the question of how much you want your car to look "like a tractor" (as somebody put it).

I actually had a little accident recently (knuckleheaded coming the othe rway made a LAST second left hand turn in front of me as I was going through an intersection and then ran -- chased him down and was able to make a claim) that has shifted my focus. I'm using my claim to get the touchup work done and -- while I'm getting some painting done -- am doing S6 door blades (picked up at a good price from eBay Germany) and an RS6 spoiler (STOLE off another forum for $200).

So... With all that, I haven't had a chance to turn my attention to the tips yet. I may end up throwing them in the direction of Kris Hansen if I don't think I'll get to it soon. He was my "runner up" and I think it would be good etiquite to take good care of the forum moderator.

But I have heard people talk about running into problems running 245s on a narrow body A6 (2.8/3.0/2.7T) -- even if you go up in offset as the original poster would be doing with the A6 4.2 wheels. 255 may have worked on that wheel on a 4.2, but it's got the wider wheel flares to accomodate it.
