Default The X-is the newer version, the S was the original verison

THe S is 1 bar the X 1.2 bar. They may have smoothed some things, but you still have the boost issue. The S was decent.
The X is more aggressive had more mid range response.
Ths S is still an option for those who dont want the full power of the X-chip.
Maybe Jeff Moss can elaborate what the differences are between the 2 chips. I will ask him to post here.

Default the opposite is true, up to a point

In an automatic, smooth slow shifts mean there is more slippage, which results in more heat. Remember, Heat is what kills auto transmissions.

When you make gearchanges quicker, you reduce slippage, and reduce heat, thus making the tranny last longer.

Of course, this is only true up to a point - I'm sure you could make the shifts so quick that the transmission couldn't cope with it. But it is a rule of thumb. This theory is basically how a shift kit "toughens" an auto transmission.
