Default Temperature Gauge acting weird

Ok so today i found out my water temperature gauge acting weird. Even in hot weather the temperature gauge does not always want to act like it should.

Considering the thermostat was changed this spring, i'm thinking the problem probably comes from the ECT.

My question:
Do you guys think this would solve the problem?
Is there only 1 or 2 ECTs on a 98 2.8Q?
What's the dealer part number ?

thank you !

What do you mean by weird? Mine would go to mid point, fall, then rise and then fall to C and stay there. Sometimes it would work just fine.

Dealer replaced my ECT through a warranty extension to 100K miles for bad ECTs for MY2000-2004 A6s. I own an 03 A6 Avant. I think the part is cheap (like $20) and supposedly easy to do.

Changed the ECT myself today, and the gauge is working fine now. It was very easy to do. I actually bought the parts from a local VW Dealership. I just told them it was for a Passat 98 2.8 and they gave me the good part with the matching O-Ring. it did cost me about 25$ for the sensor and o-ring.
