Default Stage 2 catlyctic converter failed

I'm new to the board, so please bear with me if there's been a recent thread. I just bought an '02 A6 Avant with under 34K miles. Took it on its first trip over 100 miles yesterday and the "Check engine" light came on about 150 miles from home. It seemed to run fine so I drove it back (the gas cap, btw, was on tight at 3 clicks). Had it diagnosed today and the OBD read that it was the stage 2 catalyctic converter. Strange for a 34K mile car. Three things:
1) Is this common, and
2) Should it be covered under warranty? of course the standard warranty of up, but what about the emissions warranty?
3) Could this be a cause of the pathetic mileeage I've been getting? I'm not a stoplight drag racer, I drive this car pretty conservatively, but around town I get 17 mpg if Im lucky, and at a steady 75mph on a flat freeway, I could only coax 22.7 out of it.

Default To answer your questions in order: 1. not too common here, especially on cars with only

34K miles.

2. Yes, covered under federal emissions warranty, 8 years or 80k miles. As RichPugh says, enjoy your free dealer service.

3. Doubt that's the cause of low-ish mpg. What engine do you have in your avant - the 3.0?

Thanks to all for the help. I'll call the dealer today.

Yes, my engine's the 3.0. I just bought the car (my first Audi), so I wanted to see what kind of mileage I could expect. I really didn't expect to struggle to get 17-17.5 around town and 22.5 on the freeway. I get better mileage in my 350Z, even with more "spirited" driving. Any hints or areas to investigate for improvements? It's almost impossible to drive more conservatively and still make forward progress.

Default 8/80.. I just got mine replaced at Anchor Audi last week... converter with gaskets $817.00, thank l

god I wasn't over 80,000 miles. Labor is $125.00 an hour plus the $817.00 for the part.. but ofcourse when I dropped it of they "found" something else wrong with the car but since I was getting a free cat I didn't care. I let them fix the tie rod end they said was loose..but I already knew that.. ;-)

Audi has more weight and all-wheel drive when compared to your 350Z, but yes your mileage sounds low
