Satellite Radio.. To Be or Not To Be..!
2004 A6 with a stock radio and on the radio i have a button which looks to be for satellite radio.. (the button says "SAT") .. When i push it it says on the display"NO SAT RADIO" .. I guess my question is this.. how or where do i get the radio's serial # or ID #.. im guessing that that would be what Sirius/XM would need.. I looked at and around the radio and looked in the owners manual.. Nada..! .. Would the VIN # be linked to something like the radio's ID.. I did speak with Sirius/XM... there was a "language" barrier which did not make the possess easy.. we did not figure it out.. Any insight would be much appreciated as my local channels are making me want to test my airbags..!!

I have the same year A6 and SAT feature on mine too, but I don't use the service. This is a strange one because when I push that SAT button my display shows something different like "updating" to the upper left and XM1 on the right of the display, I also hear a demo ad to subscribe to the service.
It's possible the feature is not set in the radio module coding, only vag-com would show that or your sat tuner is missing in the trunk.
Also try to hit the menu button when your in the SAT mode, see what that does.

I've had S/XM for several years but I find it's not all it's cracked up to be unless you're a Howard fan. If you're any type of audiophile, sound quality of music stations is seriously lacking.
Have you considered one of the streaming music services like MOG.com? You might be happier getting an aux-in interface for your radio and then subscribing to a streaming music service for your smartphone and banish your local FM stations that way (come to think of it, I think you can get S/XM as a stream now, too).

Jcman has the tuner installed but not subscribe to the SAT radio while Mcrouse does not tuner and it needs to install the SAT tuner before subscribe the service.

Premature observation maybe.
Mcrouse doesn’t know what he has yet, let alone the possibility of set-up issue or problem. I’ve seen OEM XM tuners on Flea-Bay cheap because nobody really wants them, I like to keep my garage queen stock and equipped with the parts it came with even if I don't use them.

If it helps your search the tuner is typically in the driver side rear of the trunk and looks something like this;
