Replace side view mirror glass.
I just bought my first Audi today. It's an 01 A6 2.8 Quattro. The drivers side side view mirror glass is not in great shape. I have found plenty of places online that sell replacement glass but does anyone have a suggestion on how I get the bad glass out of the mirror assembly?
Thanks!
Thanks!

This may be one of those deals where it will be cheaper in the long run to take it to a glass shop that does cars. They know how to replace the mirror without destroying the cable and adjusters behind it.

Try "Advanced Search" on the c5 and b5 forums as I believe the mirrors are the same. Others back in the day would say STFA right off. I found several posts in a few minutes reading. Just make sure you use quotes around keywords like it says and -Show Results as- posts or your search will suck.
What a first post for me! I've been reading and searching these forums for nine years or so and always found most everything I needed here. Only registered now to get more view options with the new format.
Welcome to the A6 world and AudiWorld as well.
Are you planning on doing a lot work on this car yourself?

It isn't a tough task. Put a cloth around the bottom edge of the mirror case/lip and then use a putty knife to pop the mirror out of its mount. It is held in with a few long thing "fingers".
The cloth serves to protect the painted mirror casing as you use the bottom lip to leverage the putty knife against the bottom back of the mirror. Once you pop it off, you'll need to disconnect the two wires to the heating element and if you have the auto-dim feature there will be two wires for that too.

The glass simply pulls out. Slide your fingers around and behind it and pull.
There will be a couple plugs attached, 1 for heating, 1 for autodimming (if featured on your car).
We carry European blind spot glass as an option for replacement as well!
Features a blind spot convex outer portion to widen your field of view.

Thanks for all the help guys. I am planning to do as much work as possible on the car. It's got 85k miles on it and I know the timing belt hasn't been done yet so I plan to do that relatively soon. I've done a fair amount of work on my own cars but this one will be a bigger undertaking. I'm planning to pick up the Bentley manual as that seems to be the one recommended most often.
On the mirror, I'm honestly not sure if it has the auto dimming/heated feature or not but thanks for the offer Silver Arrow. I'll take a look and get back to you. I pick up the car tonight!
