Default Oil Pressure Warning LIght

To start with I have an 2002 A6 Avant 3.0 with 339,000 miles on it. I have owned the car since it had 21,000 miles. I always did the required oil changes timing belt changes, and all the regular maintenance that was required. Lately because I was caught in the financial debacle a couple of years ago I haven't been able to keep the car as much as I had been.

My called me a couple weeks ago saying she couldn't start the car. when I got home the low pressure warning light was on and the car wouldn't start. I don't know what to do or where to start. Prior to this I have had the dealer or one or two local shops do the work. But now becuase of money I need to see what I can do.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where to begin? What VAG tool should I buy? Does the Bentley repair manual give enough detail to do what I need on this car? Any help or suggestions will be hugely appreciated.

I love my car. It's been the best car I have ever owned bar none. I want to get it back on the road and hit 500,000 miles. Please advise. Thanks.

Default Wow!..... "339k miles on a 3.0"......

If you made it that far it sounds like that engine is ready for some major engine work, in short you either have a bad oil pump or "sludge" blocked oil passages and the only way to tell is a lot more than you might want to read.

Does the engine turn over?

Low oil pressure light means nothing unless the car is running. Pull some codes with a generic scanner (or better yet, VAG-COM) and see what's up.

Any VW/Audi car you over crank trying to start will start beeping the oil pressure light at you. Not sure why

The engine cranks like normal and sounds like it always has. Just doesn't want to start.

Default No over crank

The wife was driving when the light first came on. Then the next day when she went to start up, the light came on immediately and wouldn't start.

Default VAG-COM

I am a total neophite with these cars. I want to start working on this one to keep the cost down and to have a project that is worth while.

What is VAG - COM and where do I get it? Also, do you recommend that I get a Bentley Repair Manual? I can't decide if it's the service manual I need or the Repair Manual. I need something that is very detailed.
