I worked for Napa many years ago and Napa Gold filters are WIX, and are very high quality. If using cartidges you can just see they are nice filters with lots of media. We had some cut open next to a fram and wow what a difference. The drain back valves are rubber and steel, while frams are cardboard and plastic.

Car has had full synthetic its entire life, I have not had anything late model (yes 2001 is late to me) I run dino oil in everything else, the good cars (911 & 912) I am running Brad Penn 20 50 and changing at 3,000 miles.

On the Audi 2.8 it had a fresh change (including the oil pan) just prior to my purchase. I did the ECS Kit with Pentosin (sp?) full syn 5-40 & the Mann filter
First change I did 5,000 mi, just ordered another kit and will be at 5K in a week or so, above I see the mention of 10K
What do you folks change it at??
The Mann filter shows 30K km for the filter but way high, 20k mi

Thanks
I guess you can always just change the slugs and jugs, like a VW.

My car has the 2.7T and I do 10,000 mile intervals - but I use decent synthetic. Amsoil, Mobil 1 and T6 are about all the car has seen.

Oil doesn't "look" clean by any means. A shorter interval may keep others happier. Like I said, at 300,000 I am happy with the service provided with 10,000 mile oil changes.

Yea the higher oil capacity of the 2.8 and 2.7 cars help alot with being able to go the 10k oil changes. On a smaller capacity 1.8T or 2.0T which seem to run alot hotter they just cook the oil to grit and sludge and really shorten the engine and turbos life.

Curious on your 300k what sort of driving, lots and lots of highway? Frequent long trip driving will keep moisture and impurities boiled out of the oil, constant short trips cause the oil to degrade quickly and contaminate with fuel and water, and turn acidic and to sludge. So that might be something to think about if you ever change driving habits. Doing 10k in a year and a half driving 2 miles a day would wear much different than 10k in less than 6 months.

Unfortunately most people never change oil on time, and if you put a sticker in the window saying 5k there in at 7k or 8k, If you put 10k, its 13-15k before they ever come in, I have customers with 1.8T and 2.0T cars that never seem to learn untill it has a major failure. Then its on top of oil changes with the next engine or car lol.

Agree 100%. My gf has a 1.8T and I tell her to let me know every 5,000 miles so I can change that (she doesn't always). That engine is obviously known for the sludge issue and you are right, the oil just gets burned up.

My driving isn't necessarily all longer drives, but I drive about 40-45K/year so a good portion of it is running a couple hours at a time sometimes, even if it is not all highway miles.

And you are right again - just like with my gf, if you tell someone 10,000 miles they will show up with 12,000 miles.

So the original poster was asking in regard to the very unusual filter that is used on the V8s. I have only found them available from Mann and Mahle, and of course Audi, which is a repackaging of the others. Most sources have them at about $20 to $25 each. Does anyone know if the other filter providers mentioned actually make the very tall unusual filter for the V8?

Thanks Gerry for bringing it back around to the original question! The v-8 takes an odd/long filter with a neat little hex head stub on the end of it for easier installation. BOSCH 72183 is the magic part number I was looking for.

Weird. I've had an A6 V8 since January 2000 and none of the OEM or Mann filters I've used have a hex on the end.
I just went out to the garage and looked at my spare Mann W735/2 and indeed it doesn't have a hex on the end.
So I googled Mann W735/2 and among the images was a filter with a hex head on the end, and walla, it's a Mann W735/1!

I don't know where the Mann W735/1 is even sold except it was on the MANN-FILTER Online Catalogue China.

Update:
JCWhitney sells both the 735/1 and 735/2. The/ 2 is about $6 more expensive than the /1.
ECS tuning sells the Mann filter for about $15.

Here are specs for /2:
2.99 in. L
2.44 in. W
2.8 in. diameter
7.48 in. H
M24 x 2 thread size; 2.5 bypass valve opening pressure; 1 anti drain back valve; Canister type; Enhanced and complemented with pressure and corrosion resistant housings

I just measured my W735/2 and it is 7 ⅜" long. I don't know what the L is on the specs.
