New Shocks - $0.01 for your thoughts
Amazing that I still have the orig shocks on this car with 140K on the clock. Any suggestions from C5 land on a good replacement shocks for a Sport Pkg car? Been hunting around on TireRack for a while and interested to see what ya'all are running for replacements......

I'm wondering about which brand of shock to replace mine with, too. My '01 A-6 w/102K on it is probably due. I've been an import mechanic in a past life and found Bilsteins to be cheaply priced, but, unfortunately, seemingly cheaply manufactured. I guess Koni would be a good choice, have used them in the race cars I now take care of and have been happy, but don't know if there are other brands I'm neglecting. Also, what is the original manufacturer of the control arms for these cars? I've got to replace a lower and upper front arm that has already been replaced in this car's history. They need to be replaced again and the originals are still in good shape i.e. no clunking or play. Thanks all.

I certainly disagree about bilsteins being cheaply made. They have the best tolerances in the industry. The problem is that they also have a penchant for over-damping. I generally find their kits, or full kits that they are part of, to be far better matched. That said. i would probably try them, and likely will when my S6 needs shocks.
I'll also ntoe that there is one race-team where the suspension engineer put all the damping consistency curves, as measured, on he internet. Aside from some specialty race sets, the Bilsteins were the onyl ones to have unit to unit consistency,and smooth damping curves.
They are also OEM to both Porsche and benz, and the upgrade on most premium GM cars, except, ironically, where GM uses their own magnetrheological system- THE standrad of the world ( Ferarri, Audi R8 option ....)

Our KONI Sports are by far the most comfortable shock for the A6.
Bilsteins are another very good option, but not quite as comfortable as the KONI's.

If you're looking for new ones, they're only available through your dealership.
For used springs, check with an auto dismantler like Shokan, BW, and any other Audi specialist.

Yeah, well, now I have egg on my face as "JustMe" is correct. I was having a semi-senior moment and what I should have said was KYBs are cheap and seemingly cheaply made. My apologies to dissing Bilstein. When I was working at an import garage and we did a lot of KYB shocks onto VWs and Audis, occasionally they'd come back with a mounting bracket broken off, so I was not crazy about them as replacement shocks (which may be a moot point as I don't even know if they're in business any longer).

Does sport-suspension lower the car? Cause the inner of my tires are almost bald due to lowering. I can deal with a firmer ride, besides just got whole new control arms cause ride was really crappy and some of the bushings were ripped right off. The previous owner put spacers in the springs cause he lowered it too much.
