Default Coolant Leak With Misfires

2002 3.0L Quattro

So I made a thread about this before and I had brought in my car to the shop where they told me I had a bad head gasket. I haven't had it fixed yet because I was quoted $2700, which is not worth fixing because the car needs a few other things done also.

I was getting an occasional misfire on cylinder #2, which is from a small coolant leak. The weird part is though that I now am getting an occasional misfire on cylinder #5 too. I want to get a second opinion on the head gasket now because realistically, what are the chances that both of my head gaskets are blown within a few months of each other? I don't loose that much coolant, and I only get a puff of sweet smelling exhaust on a cold start about once a week.

Is there any hose that it could be rather than the head gasket? My mechanic said something about an o-ring or a pipe that can leak causing coolant to get into the #2 and #5 cylinders. I never get misfires once the car is warmed up, and I don't loose coolant while the car is running from what I can tell.

Let's try this again, with a different method...

Why oh why don't you try to diagnose your own coolant leak if it's in the head gasket there is a test kit that is surely less expensive than paying diagnostic costs from a mechanic that you evidently don't trust to give you an accurate diagnosis?? Here's one…get bizzy!!
