We have the engine & trans pulled from the car to change clutch, engine mounts, turbos, etc.
C5 A6 2.7T 6spd MT
The clutch was slipping & my son mentioned that he had been having difficulty putting car into 1st gear. All other gears engaged easily, but not 1st.

We're changing the clutch assy, along with flywheel & bearings. Also going to do front & rear trans seals & drive axle seals. Didn't want to get into transmission, & I'm hoping worn clutch is our 1st gear problem.

The clutch plate was worn almost down to the rivets. Can a worn clutch be the cause for trouble getting into 1st gear?

yes. but it should also have affected other gears...
