HELP: Radiator Fan Keeps Running After Engine Shut-Off- '02 A6 2.7T
The Fans on my 2002 A6 2.7T Keep Running Even After I Shut Off The Engine - What is the problem?
My radiator fan(s) continue to run for 5-10 minutes aftyer I turn-off the engine. This is an 2002 A6 2.7T. Coincidently it started doing this after I replced the ECT sensor with the new green sensor to clear a CEL. I believe I installed the sensor correctly and the CEL went away. Do you think the replacement sensor is related to the fan run-on? Grounding? Relay? Something I can fix or do I need to go to the dealer? Thanks for any help.

Are you sure there's a problem? I know the VR6 VWs have after-run coolant pumps and the pumps and fans run to cool the engine after shut-off to prevent heat soaking the head. Maybe it just didn't run before because there was a problem.

I am guessing that you are in an area that is pretty warm right now?? Most likely this is normal operation I believe. If the car gets above a certain temperature - the fans are supposed to stay on to cool the engine/turbos after shut-down. Maybe it was cool enough that your engine temps weren't getting above this trigger point (I believe it's 250*) before?

Thanks guys - that's a relief to hear. A couple of guys over at Audizine confirmed the same thing. I guess the new green ECT sensor made the difference with engaging the fans combined with the increasing spring/summer temperatures now. Thanks again for the info.

I can and will run on hot days or after super hard load. If its continuing to do it even when the engines cold, or never stops, suspect the fan controller. There is a seperate cooling fan switch in the lower hose not sure if it has much to do with the after run of the fan.

The fan control module in a C5 2.7t is triggered by only the following:
Engine coolant temperature by thermoswitches F18 and F54, low speed and high speed fan;
Turbo afterrun pump thermoswitch F95, only if the engine is not running;
Airconditioning pressure switch F129 - fans in medium speed if AC pressure higher than normal;
Air Conditioning on line from HVAC control system turns fans on
There aren't any other inputs to the Fan Control Module...
