2) Remove hard plastic panel over steering column by pulling.
3) Locate two phillips head screws under hard plastic panel and remove.
4) Remove cluster by pulling towards the back of the car.
5) Remove the cables from the back of the cluster by unlocking them. There are three cables.
6) Send the cluster out to be repaired, unless you are a wizard at desoldering and resoldering tiny parts.
7) Reinstallation is the reverse of removal. (Haynes Manuals always said that!)

So I took it back today to the guy that repaired my cluster.
He connected it up to VAG COM and went through all the settings for instrument cluster. the code was something like
+01 = Larger Fuel Tank (80 liters for 8-Cylinder Quattro and S6
+02 = Seatbelt Warning active
7 = Australia and New Zealand
83 = 8-Cylinder Gasoline
so the code was 03783 which was correct.
The reason why it did not work was he had to zero something out, this clears some data somewhere and the changes don't take affect unless you do this.
He then told me he just refunded another audi customer because they had the same problem and audi charged $1000 to fix it.
It was painful to watch this guy go through this as I was imagining myself going back to the audi dealer to get my wallet raped!
Hope this helps anyone else that may come across this issue!
