Audi A7 PMPU quatturbo
Audi AG Press Release
AUDI AG today announced the unanticipated and remarkable 2002 Audi A7 PMPU (PushMePullYou) to European and North American markets. The new model offers an innovative and radical departure from current market designs, by essentially combining two Audis into one. The new A7 PMPU is comprised of two opposing front-halves of the award winning A6 2.7T, each end containing all the components found in the front half of the A6 2.7T.
Offering unprecedented quad-turbo design, the A7 PMPU sports two 250HP twin-turbo 2.7 litre engines seamlessly linked together by the legendary all-wheel drive quattro powertrain. Producing an incredible combined output of 500HP and 538 lb-feet of torque, the A7 PMPU sprints from 0 to 60mph in only 3.8 seconds. Another exciting feature of the A7 PMPU is full time four-wheel steering, incorporating ESM (Electronic Steering Management) in addition to the ESP (Electronic Stability Program). Four-wheel steering offers a level of safety, roadhandling and maneuverability never found before in a production automobile. The four-wheel steering is also a tremendous benefit when parking the automobile. 18-inch forged aluminium wheels of 5-spoke design with 245/55 ZR 18 tires provide the grip required to manage the enormous power provided by the two engines. The A7 PMPU can be operated with a single engine for better economy, or both engines for maximum performance.
Each half contains a complete driver cockpit and dashboard, including steering wheel, pedal cluster, shifter, climate and ergonomic controls. Another innovative first is four 14-way power seats that can rotate 180? such that passengers can orient themselves to face each other, or choose any configuration they prefer. Bi-directional driving is completely computer controlled, as the car can be stopped and immediately driven in the opposite direction. All direction-related features are automatically managed by onboard systems. Headlamps, for example, become tail lights via high-intensity LED lamps.
"This is the first production automobile to offer a truly dynamic and flexible driving experience. By doubling-up the best features of the A6, we have produced an entire new concept in driving, offering performance, handling, luxury and versatility never before seen" said Wolfgang Kunder, head of the AUDI engineering team that developed the A7 PMPU.
The new A7 PMPU quatturbo is expected to arrive in North America in May of 2002. The estimated price tag is $72,000 USD.
