The left side cat on my 1996 A6 Quattro AT wagon bit the dust a year or so ago so after getting a price of $900 from the dealer (part only), I bought an aftermarket one($280) plus O2 sensor and had them put on. Now the check engine light indicates that the right side cat is shot. I bought a replacement from the same source and it bolted up ok except the O2 port was in the wrong place and you couldn't fit the sensor because it would bump into the tranny. I reinstalled the original cat, which looked brand new to me, plus a new sensor and sent the replacement cat back. I've been told by several other aftermarket suppliers that no one is making the cat for the cars that have OBD2 systems and you can only get the part from Audi. This seems nuts to me. What is the straight scoop?

Email me if youd like the name of a place that can rebuild your original unit.
The right side gone bad (coming apart internally)is kind of rare. Its even more rare that its causing a MIL. What codes did they pull?

Re: Email me if youd like the name of a place that can rebuild your original unit.
The right side cat did not break up like the left side had. I don't know what the code was (I can find out) but it was something like "right bank cat inefficient" or something like that. It looked like new when we took it off during the replacement try. And the check engine light that shows this fault is intermitent. It could be on for months and off for months. ?????

I am having the same problem on my 2000 A6 ...
I am currently having the same problem on my ride. You must be getting the P0431 or P0421 code. I can't remember which is what.
Anyway, it's an emissions control problem. I am having it now. While troubleshooting my car, I found out that the Engine Coolant Temp is going nuts (Fluxuating about 50F)
I replaced my ECT and the problem went away for about a week or two. It's back now. I don't think I fixed the problem completely, because the temp is still fluxuating.
If you can, log your ECT. See if it's all over the place. If it is, then we may have similar problem.
