How do you determine when the cam chains need replacing? I am working on a 4.2 engine and will be removing the camshafts. The car has 176,000 miles on it but runs well. I was in the process of correcting a camshaft end plug leak and thought if the cam chains needed replacing that now was a good time to do it. How do you determine when the chain is stretched beyond service limits?

Chains don't stretch. Never.

Check the guides on the tensioner/adjuster unit. If grooved deeply, replace.
