So I pulled the vent and was able to blow through both ends of it with no resistance. Does that mean it is bad?

Yes thats the breather valve, I would replace that, and all the parts/hoses from each valve cover and the one down to the valley and be sure the hole into the valley is not clogged up. Good luck removing them in one piece if you do want to try cleaning them they are garbage thin plastic. The older 2.8 ones are easier to remove and more robust so i was able to remove mine and clean it out.

How can I tell if the vent is bad? Should I be able to blow through it?

Really, on the cars iv had in with oil consumption problems, It was the only thing to try before saying the engine had a more mechanical issue. It has fixed the issue with too much oil being used on plenty of engines. 1.8Ts, 2.8 30v, 3.0, seem to need breather part replacement at some point in life. After 100k the parts get full of junk and sludged up and they just dont function 100% anymore.

Unless the valve totally fails open and causes a huge vacuum leak, there is no way to know if its good. If replacing all the parts doesnt fix it, then your looking at valve seals or oil control rings, which is basically a rebuild.

My idle is smooth as silk, so no vacuum leak as far as I can tell. I'll replace the valve soon and see if that reduces consumption at all.

be sure to replace ALL the parts and hoses. They get blocked up and then the engine cant breath and starts consuming oil.

Is there a write-up or DIY anywhere? How hard is it to replace them on the 3.0?
