Default 6 spd gear box: how to fill with right amount of oil?

Today, I drained a quart of gear oil out of my 2002 6 spd (2.7T).
Put a hose into the 'fill plug' (driver side, halfway up) and tried to get a quart of oil in, but started to drain out after maybe 2/3 quarts.

Can someone link me to the proper procedure?

Thanks.

Did you open the fill plug before you drained the alleged quart?

If not, it's possible the fill was higher than the bottom of the fill plug.

Otherwise, it seems you're doing the manual transmission fill correctly. Assuming you opened the correct fill port....

It retrospect, I realized I should have opened the fill plug first, for 2 reasons:

a) see if it was overfilled (or even try to push some fluid in to determine if and how much fluid was MISSING
b) to be sure I can get the plug off. No good if oil drained, then realize you can get the plug off to fill new fluid in.

Well, next time I know (one gets smarter every time).

If I drained more than I can get in: how could it be possible that TOO MUCH fluid was in?

From the auto trans, I know that the procedure actually calls for a specific temperature the trans has to be at (to be checked with VAGcom, IIRC 43 deg C or so).

My car was warm (10 miles country road, easy driving; outside temp 40 deg F or so), not hot). Fluid I put in was colder (say 50).

Should I run the engine, shift through gears, etc. (like with auto trans fluid change), then try to get some more in?

Or let car cool down over night, and refill when cold?

Shifting feels a bit better, first and 2nd go in smoother, easier. Just want to make sure the oil level is not too low!
