Default Bad Idea to tow 1600lb boat with 2002 Audi S6 Avant?

I am pretty sure the allroad can do it no prob, but on the S6 Avant and have heard rumors here and there it is not recommended.

I have a uhaul class 1 hitch that was for an A6 avant quattro installed already (2000lbs rated)

Thoughts on doing this? If it were a jet ski I would do it but this new jet boat weighs quite a bit.

I know the tranny is weak in the s6 and I have 100k on the ODO. I would tow in sport mode (slow acceleration)

Thoughts? Thanks

Tom

I'd get your "weak" trans fixed first, then tow the boat.

This will not be a problem. Assuming (based on your post) that you have the "Curt" hitch that mounts to the spare tire well. I had this on my wife's 3.0 A6, and routinely towed in excess of 2k lbs. While I don't necessarily recommend exceeding the capacity of the hitch, the car will not complain. Just drive it like a reasonable person towing the trailer, and you won't have a problem. Even with a fairly light load of 1600lb, it will increase your acceleration and braking times, so be prepared and plan ahead to make it easier on the car. It sounds like this is your plan. FWIW, it's fine, but not necessary to use sport mode on the trans.

careful, you don't prove anything here. He has am early S6 with a known weak torque converter. You have a later audi with less torque and a newer tranny revision. So how does your experience prove he will be OK?

I think its debatable. It will certainly hasten any imminent demise through increased heat.

Maybe hastening still puts it beyond his concern, btu it does.

I think it is a stretch to say imply that torque converter failures are linked to load and use.

"Weak" is probably a misnomer. Internal seal failures (the "weakness")can happen on any of the 02-04 C5's, regardless of engine type, hp or use.

Have to say that I agree. The TC failure is not a mechanical failure due to load. It is a poorly designed seal that simply fails from age/use. Increased payload will have no effect on the stress on this seal.

i understand they are directly linked to heat over pressure adn time.

Do you know differently?

Mileage and use do not seem to make a difference. The 3.0 cars fail with roughly the same frequency as the 4.2.
