Any of you 6-speeders have a tough time shifting into 2nd when it's cold?

Why synthetic oil helps :
The synchromesh is done by two cones that contact each other when you change gear. Friction between the two cones is essential to match speeds. However when the gearbox and oil are cold, the oil is thick. It tends to get sprayed onto the synchro cones and not run off. As the oil is warmed it becomes less viscose and runs off the synchro cones more easily, leaving them dryer and giving more friction.
Synthetic oil helps as its thinner at cold temps while retaining its high temp properties, hence still good lubrication of the gears but better synchro effort especially at low temps.
Of course it won't fix a bad clutch but it will help the synchros work better at cold temps.

Yada yada yada, forget my opinion and post the Q on the S4 board. Oil change just prolonging the
inevitable. If 1st 2nd and or reverse are getting a little rough, put a clutch in it pronto.
