Amsoil not on the Audi 502.00 list?
Whaddya know, it's another OIL QUESTION! Just bought 14 quarts of Amsoil 5-40, and now I look at Audi's approved list, and there's no Amsoil on there at all. Amsoil's web site says they meet the spec; what gives? Should I use Valvoline SynPower instead? Or MaxLife (can't find the specs on this oil, don't leak, but it looks like they're trying...) Is my car going to burst into flames? Should I file an ugly lawsuit against Amsoil? It's the 2.8 30V, '99 A6 Avant Quattro...

no flames, it's going to change into a flying squirrel/emu cross breed overnight
anyway...
I've been using amsoil..no probs with the exception of burning a bit of 0w30, switched to 5w40, trying that out, but I'm only about 1.5k into that.
but yeah, I wondered about that too, but my mechanics swear by the stuff, since they have to deal with it, I'll trust them (they're not exactly motivated by money with me)

no flames here either, who knows what criteria is used to create those lists??
In the real world AmsOil works WELL... used in my 2.8q, and 1.8t with LOTS of boost, for 130k miles combined... excellent results and complete confidence here

use the Amsoil, just change it every 5k. You'll be fine. >
The Audi approved oils are for 10k oil change intervals. (along with long life filter)
I'm not a fan of 10k changes no matter WHAT oil I use. 5k has worked well for me.

Liek all approved lists, its a combination of actual testing, and
The vendor choosing to submit it, support the tests, and likely pay the testing costs. Same for ECEA, API, UL, NEBS, CEmark etc.

Amsoil CAN go as long as 15k if you change the filter every 7.5k.
Based on the huge size of he filter in the S6, I'm guessing it's probably good for 10k.
Amsoil is great stuff. Use the 5w-40 European Formula.

Heres what you do. Change the filter at you regular intervals, leaving you oil in your engine, replacing only the oil lost in the filter. send a sample in to get analyzed. This will tell you exactly how much of what is in your oil. This way you know, if there is eccess cast iron in your oil you might have a problem with your crank shaft. If you have more than normal nickel content floating around you probably have shotty bearings.
I have done this in my Maxima every 7000 for over 60K and my oil still looks brand new
This ends up costing about the same, BUT, you find out alot better info than just DIRTY or NOT SO DIRTY.
The first time you put Amzoil in, drop the pan and check the magnets!
