A6 Power Seat problem

A6 Power Seat problem
I've got a 1998 A6 (C5) Avant with power sports seats with memory, that has just developed a problem. First it seemed that the memory was forgetting itself - it got everything right except the backrest angle, which it tried to recline fully. When I then tried bringing the backrest back up myself it went so far and then stopped moving and it sounded like the gear mechanism was slipping. The seat would go back down...and then up again but only so far.
I managed to get the backrest up to a better angle by giving it some help by pulling on headrest at same time as adjusting..and it will now recline a little and then come back to the same position - but it won't move it any further (get same clicking sound).
I've been to my dealer who has taken a quick look but says he needs to take the seat out and investigate (at about 2 hrs labour) before he could say what the problem is. (I'm hoping that as the motor seems to be working it's a broken tooth etc on the centre rod the runs through the motor...)
Before I go ahead and get him to do that has anyone had anything like this before - and if so how costly was the repair ?
Many thanks in advance
Nick

Well, one of the motors could be dead (each seat has 3)
Cost is around $370 + labour.

I know there is more, but can't think of the right word combinations to dredge it up.<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/392989.phtml">another thread</a></li></ul>

Re: Well, one of the motors could be dead (each seat has 3)
The motor isn't dead ...the seat will come up and recline...but the motor only moves the splined rod (you can see if behind each side cover )one turn in either direction before it starts slipping ...
I wondered whether some teeth were broken from the splined rod - but I can't figure out how that would enable it to turn once only...(as the splined rod fits in the splined motor )
