I keep getting a CEL mis-fire cyl 6. When starting cold after not using for a day or two, it runs rough and blows smoke. Rev it up a couple times and it runs smooth. I changed plugs and coil-packs already. I'm thinking valve seal leaking when engine is off. I also am losing a little water. maybe a cup a month. I'm having to add oil before it's time to change oil.

Is there a way to test to verify the problems without tearing down the engine? Any suggestions out there?

I may be missing something here but, are you sure your car is "2001 A6 3.0"? My Bentley manual only shows 3.0 starting from 2002. Perhaps yours is a 2.8 (ATQ)?

Also, any codes?

Correct.
Either the car isn't 2001 or it isn't a 3.0. For his sake, I hope the car is a 2.8.

If that is the case, the coolant temp sensor needs to be replaced.
