Default 2.8 Quattro Tip- short 1-2 shift

Looking through the posts, it seems there is a certain amount of "luxury" that one must put up with in the tranny characteristics of a 2.8 Tip.

I've just acquired this car, and notice that the 1-2 shift is VERY short, i.e. it shifts at about 6-8 mph, whether I am in D or tip mode. Is this "luxury"?

That being said, does this also prevent a good launch of the car off the line. I've not really gotten on it yet, but it seems a bit sluggish until the RPMs get pretty high in 2nd gear.

thanks-

Default What year car is your A6? You could consider the 00032 tiptronic code...

...via VAG COM, but it does not work on all years.

Default 2.8 = sluggish

My family/wife's car is a '99 2.8 Avant. They are sluggish until 2500-or-so-RPM and then they are just ok in the acceleration dept. Also, yes it will shift to 2nd right away. Also, you may notice when the engine/trans is cold it will hold 1st gear a lot longer.

There are supposed to be "thousands of shift programs" in the adaptive TCU, so in theory if you start to stoplight race with the car, the transmission should change it's behavior.

Default Why would it "short shift" while in TIP mode? Sounds odd.

IIRC in TIP mine will hold 1st well past 3k rpm if I so desire. When I want a little more getup-and-go I typically hold 1st till about 3600 so that it shifts into 2nd at around 2600 or so (above that sluggish 2100-2300 range in 2nd).

Default Re: 2.8 Quattro Tip- short 1-2 shift

I've got a 1999 2.8 Q w/ Tip. Mine is exactly the same way. It'll shift into 2nd at around 2000 - 2300 RPM whether I'm in "D" or "Tip" modes ... but that's when I'm driving like a grandma.

If I get on the gas and really stomp on it, mine seems to hold first longer and shift into second around 4-5 grand.

Try driving it differently (heavy footed, etc) for a few trips and see what happens..

As BD says, if you can find someone with a VAG-COM, you can re-code the transmission to allow you to take 1st all the way to redline before shifting to second automatically in Tip Mode.

Also, can look here:

which ironically links back to an AW thread!

Default If it's a '99, then it is what it is

I tried several times to recode my '99 and it just wouldn't take.

If you're transmission is upshifting at 8 mph, then you're just not into the throttle enough.

Then again, the only time I used the tip was when the engine was cold and I wanted to short shift out of the cold engine program which held 1st gear too long.

Default Re: 2.8 Quattro Tip- short 1-2 shift

Car is a 2000. I mostly have been on it b/c I've been waiting for parts to arrive to replace the brakes...if you're gonna go, you've gotta be able to stop.

I stomped it today in tip-mode. it held 1st much longer, though not quite to where I would have shifted. But, at least I know that its not that way all the time.

Default Holy cow! Mine would hold much longer than that, depending on throttle input.

IIRC, in tip it would hold to redline if I let it.
